January 10, 2009: Nor-Am PGS

Steamboat Springs, CO – Today’s PGS race didn’t feel as good as yesterday’s PSL race although I did place a little higher: 10th. I had good qualifying runs and made it to the finals but my two runs in the first round of the finals were solid but very conservative. I didn’t feel like I was out of control, and usually that equates to being slow. I think it might have something to do with my equipment setup and lack of feeling on my board. I’m switching bindings and possibly board, so I’m a little sad to have to retire my bindings that I’ve been on for 4 or 5 years. But it’s time for a change.

On the positive side, my coach said I was “ripping” my warm-up runs (a very good thing) and that when I’m freeriding I’m starting to really build a platform to carry more speed and get the most out of the turn that I can. So that was a bright spot of the day.

Another bright spot was that my former teammate and original member of the Philippine Snowboard Team, Jondre Mina, has made his comeback debut at this race! It’s been 6 or 7 years since we’ve raced together so it was great that he’s returning to the circuit. The racing side of the team is back up to two members!

Things to work on: Pressuring the board throughout the turn, particularly at the beginning when I’ve changed edges, and maintaining that pressure before releasing into the next turn. Also fine tuning my line in a race course so that I can do the above cleanly and not get late in the course.

Next up: Back to Vail, CO for some freeriding and equipment testing before heading to the World Championships in Korea.
