January 15, 2009: The Most Amazing Day

San Francisco Airport, California – Being at the airport is not the most amazing day, but not a bad one (nice airport with good food). I’m awaiting my flight to Korea for my fifth Snowboard World Championships! Like last time, the Philippines will be sending two athletes, Lawrence de Guzman (freestyle) and me.

The most amazing day was a few days ago when I was just freeriding in Beaver Creek, Colorado. The weather was pristine – a comfortable 30 degree temperature, no wind and sunny blue skies. The snowcat drivers at Beaver Creek did their usual spectacular job of grooming the slopes to perfection, and there was some mid-day grooming too!

That day I tried a different board and bindings, and loved it. The new equipment is making everything easier, cleaner and faster. It’s a little risky to take new equipment to a big race after only being on it for a few days, but I was riding really well, better than I had on my old setup, and I had this gut feeling that I should be taking the new equipment.

I couldn’t have asked for a better day! It was the best day of freeriding that I’ve had in many years, perhaps ever. It was that type of day that makes everything, even the occasional not-so-good day, worth it. It definitely rekindled my love for the sport, and put me in a great mood to go to World Champs!
