January 17, 2009: Korea!

Sungwoo Resort, Gangwon, Korea – Well after over 24 hours of traveling I made it to Korea for the Snowboard World Championships! The resort is about 2.5 hours from Seoul, in a town of its own, but it’s pretty impressive. The hotel is enormous! And it has a bowling alley, gym, pool, and a ton of shops and restaurants. It truly is a destination resort, evidenced by the amount of people here for the competition and the locals vacationing.

It is a pretty traditional hotel heavily influenced by Asian values. Korea is up and coming in terms of snow mountain sports so it’s great to see so many people learning to ski and snowboard (although a bit difficult to navigate through). And the organizing committee is doing a fantastic job in terms of slope conditions, food and events.

I just took some free runs on my slalom board this morning to get the kinks out of my traveled body. The time difference is a bit tough to deal with though; a 16 hour difference from Colorado where I flew from and a sleepless night challenged my balance for the first few runs. I did get to see my teammate, Lawrence de Guzman (the freestyle half of the Philippine Snowboard Team) compete in the Snowboardercross where he had two solid runs. The opening ceremonies are tonight where the Philippines will be represented for the fifth consecutive time. Lawrence even got picked to represent Asia in the fireworks session!

Pictures to come!
