January 25, 2009: Practice, Practice, Practice

Le Relais Resort, Quebec City, Canada – Today’s slalom was in even colder weather, minus 22 degrees (celsius) although it was not as breezy. Still amazingly cold. Exposed skin was vulnerable to frostbite and fingers and toes froze over quickly. Oh Canada.

It was so cold out that the girl that I was supposed to race in the qualifiers had to bow out due to frostbite. So I had no one to duel. It helps immensely to duel someone because it pushes you to do better. So unfortunately I had to ride both qualifying runs alone. Plus it was freezing cold. Plus I’m tired from all the travels. Plus I don’t like my slalom board. Plus I have only trained slalom maybe two days this season. Plus the course was flat. I can go on and on but they’re all just excuses, excuses.

I ended up 12th today which was somewhat disappointing. My two qualifying runs were so-so, my first run in the finals was wracked with errors, but my second run in the finals was pretty good. I ended up getting knocked out by the girl that eventually got third place, but I was able to keep up with her in my second run. For that run I focused on taking a rounder line so I can really carve out each turn and generate speed. In the runs before I was taking too straight of a line, getting late and having to put on the brakes to make the next gate. Also in that second run I learned that I have to ‘pop out’ of the turn at the stubby so it shoots me out in a rounder line and makes initiation of the next turn a lot easier. I even remember thinking, ‘oh that’s what I need to be doing’ when I was riding in the course!

Another issue I’m having with slalom is my confidence. I don’t feel the same comfort level as I do on my GS board. I’m considering getting a new slalom board by the same manufacturer as my GS board so everything is the same and I can go into each race with the same confidence. Hopefully I’ll be able to get the custom board quickly.

So what I’ve learned from today is I need to train, train, train! That’s the only way I’ll get comfortable in slalom and refine my technique. But for now off to Europe for two weeks and five race starts in Switzerland and Slovakia.
