March 22, 2209: Knowing My Limits

Vail, Colorado – Well I had a little lesson this weekend: I’m not superwoman. Of course I knew that already but I always think that my body can take all the physical activity (riding and working out everyday) and recover within that night. But I was wrong – could my age be catching up to me and my head doesn’t realize it?!

After a four-day intense training block in Calgary (which included a full day of gate and gym training), I figured taking just one day off would be enough to recover. But instead of just doing a light cardio recovery workout, I went into the gym and lifted and was on the bike and ran for the first time since I hurt my shoulder. Too much for a recovery day but I didn’t feel it until the next day when I went up on the hill and took a few turns. My legs were tired and a little sore from lifting. Ugh. But I tried to make the most of the morning and continued to ride until my technique started to suffer due to fatigue.

Lesson: I need to be smart about my physical strategy. I need to know my limits and recognize that I’m not as young as I used to be so I need to take better care of myself and sometimes put the drive to keep going to bed. It’s not about my strength or endurance or stamina, I feel that is all there and I’m in the best shape of my life, but it’s the recovery phase that I need to adjust. That doesn’t mean laziness but means listening more to my body and taking the time to rest and rejuvenate. One of the top men racers that’s currently winning is older than me and said that he can’t train like he used to or like his younger teammates.

It’s a little depressing realizing that I can’t do (or eat for that matter) everything I used to within the time frame that I used to do it. My body is getting older and needs more time to recover, but I still think I’m one of the young racers out there!
